We all know certain spices taste awesome when combined with chocolate. Well, I – being the spice crazed girl that I am – decided to make Chai Spiced Chocolates using cardamom, cinnamon, fennel seeds, cloves and sea salt. The combination turned out to be perfect – sweet, salty and warming – just like a cup of my masala chai only in the form of solid chocolate.
These chai chocolates are so simple to make. Just melt ghee in a double boiler and add freshly ground spices and then chocolate. Pour into a cute mold and then put into the refrigerator for an hour until solid. If you have any leftover chocolate, just spread it out onto parchment paper and make some chai chocolate bark.
These chai spiced chocolate candies are like an explosion of sweet chai masala in a tiny chocolatey morsel. The spices in this recipe take this chocolate to another level. If I had a candy bar company, I’d make and sell these masala chai chocolate bars and make a fortune amongst foodies. They are incredible.
I gave one of these sweets to Rob (hubby) without giving him any details about what was in them… and he replied with “this tastes like chai!” So, yes – this really does taste like chai. And it’s awesome. And if you make this, please tell me how delicious it is!

This looks so delicious, I love chai spices but is there an alternative I could use to ghee?
Ashley - My Heart Beets says
Hi Becca, any solid fat should work – butter, coconut oil (though that might affect flavor, still good I’m sure!), vegan butter, etc.

I have tried th..though they do taste delicious…i find the tiny bits of spices in mouth…no matter how finely we grind them..can they be sieved??
My Heart Beets says
I’d try grinding them more rather than straining them out – but you can do that if you prefer 🙂

Hi curious why you do you use ghee in your chai chocolate recipe? could you just mix the ground spices directly into the chocolate?
Roshni says
How much is 5 cardamom pods?I have ground cardamom and would like to use that
Michelle says
Hi Ashley,
Do you think this would be good with milk chocolate chips or just dark?
Thanks,
Michelle

Milk chocolate is great too! You can use any type of chocolate chips – I just linked to the brand I really like but any work 🙂

These were delicious, despite the fact that I forgot the cinnamon and salt in the first batch. Perhaps changing # 2 in the directions to the following would help those of us who are crazy multi-taskers to stay on point:
2.Melt ghee in a double boiler, add all of the ground spices and the cinnamon and salt and mix well.
This recipe was fast and the flavor was wonderful. Next time I will grind the spices a little finer to avoid a bite of spice, but otherwise these were perfect. Thank you for sharing such great recipes!

Glad to hear you liked them, Deanna! And I’ve made the change to step 2, thanks!

I continue to make these over and over. This is a fast recipe, they look great out of the fun mold I have. The chocolate has a great snap to it and the spices make these an amazing treat at the end of any meal (or any time). I made these for a friend’s birthday party that I had last night and he couldn’t quit eating them, they are that great. In fact, the menu last night was mostly your dishes – these chocolates, Curried Tomato Soup, Navratan Korma, and Masala Cauliflower – everything was so delicious. Thanks for making me look great in the kitchen 🙂
